Land Transfer Tax Credit

Initial Payment

In Canada, homeownership requires only a 5% down payment (conditions apply). Don’t have it saved up? Other possibilities include a gifted down payment from an immediate family member, or the Home Buyers Plan.

The Home Buyers Plan enables you to borrow up to $35,000 ($70,000 combined, for couples) tax-free from an RRSP for the down payment. You must repay this amount over 15 years to avoid taxation. Additional prerequisites include Canadian residency, no ownership of a home in the preceding five years, and the funds must remain in your RRSP for at least 90 days.
